Agricultural & Extension Education

What is Agricultural Education?

The Agricultural and Extension Education program trains students to teach within classrooms, board rooms, and agricultural environments with the latest knowledge and applied skills in agriculture. Coursework includes Agribusiness, Animal Sciences, Biotechnology, Career Development, Environmental and Natural Resources, Food Science, Leadership and Youth Development, Plant Science, and Power, Structural and Technical Systems. Students with the goal to obtain state certification in teaching will complete a series of educational courses designed to increase their experience in developing and delivering agricultural lessons in the K-12 setting. Graduates are prepared to educate the next generation as agriculturally aware and adept students.

Why study at UMD?

If you value diversity of experience and knowledge, the University of Maryland’s Agricultural & Extension Education program is the place for you. Maryland is coined “America in Miniature” due to its varied geography, demographics, industrial enterprises, and of course, diverse agriculture. With beaches to the east and mountains to the west, the University is nestled in the heart of the DC metropolitan area, which enables students vast experiences across private and public entities. Students in the program engage with other pre-service science and math education students through the Terrapin Teachers courses as well as dynamic courses with other secondary education majors.

Entry Pathways:

  • Four-Year Double Major (Bachelor’s of Science: Agricultural Science & Technology, Bachelor’s of Secondary Education Science)

  • Five-Year Integrated Master’s (Bachelor’s of Science: Agricultural Science & Technology, Master of Arts: Secondary Education)
